Part biography, part popular science, A Modest Genius provides a lively, engaging account of Darwin’s life and the events that inspired his groundbreaking theory. Science writer and biologist Hanne Strager brings Darwin to life while offering the essential elements of evolution and how they affect us today.

Much has been written on Darwin’s life, his groundbreaking work, and the influence he has had on modern scientific thought and advancements, but most books assume a certain level of scientific knowledge. A Modest Genius changes that, offering an accessible, easy-to-understand discussion of Darwin’s work.

Readers follow Darwin from his early years through his travels. Hanne Strager explains how Darwin assembled the pieces of a fascinating puzzle while also describing the fundamental principles of evolution.

Darwin’s theory, by necessity, was incomplete when he proposed it. He lacked modern knowledge of the fossil record, DNA and genetics. Strager explains how advances in these and other scientific areas expanded on Darwin’s original work. She also discusses the ongoing conflict between religion and evolution, including the famous Scopes Monkey Trial and the battle Darwin himself fought between faith and intellect.

Bold, exciting, and easily understood, A Modest Genius offers an opportunity to understand one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of the modern age.

This was a very enjoyable and educational portrait of Darwin. It was the perfect length and still covered a lot of ground. Now I better understand Darwin himself, and how he worked over years to prove his theory in the face of much opposition. Highly recommend!

A Modest Genius The story of Darwin life and how his ideas changed everything Hanne Strager Sarah Darwin eBook Reviews

A Modest Genius is an excellent introduction to Darwin's life and thought. In a style nicely calibrated for the nonspecialist, Stager offers vivid pictures of (1) Darwin's days at sea on a ship whose primary purpose was to map the shores of the Americas, as well as pictures of (2) Darwin's life and his work's reception in England and ultimately the world's scientific community. Strager's' book is a lively blend of biography and popular science for the common reader. Education is rarely made so pleasant.
I Believe this book should be required reading for all high school students, as well as others with little or misguided understanding. Evolution is science.
The book is well written -- no -- let me correct -- the book is exceptionally well written and a joy to read.
This is simply an amazing book. Solid story, excellent writing and a fantastic introduction to Darwin and Evolution. I can really recommend Hannes book.
"A Modest Genius" is a sprightly new take on a familiar story, again, this would have been a fun book to have while I was still actively teaching high school science. Even though I taught in Georgia, because my main subject area was chemistry and not biology, I never really had to deal with the "Creationist" foolishness. However, I was always very careful to make sure my students understood the importance of differentiating theory from fact, and the requirement for valid testing of hypothesis with reproducible experiments before assertions of "truth" were made. This book is rich in detail and anecdote, and deserves a wide audience,
I'm a science student, and my dad has little experience with science, and yet we bot read the book and absolutely loved it! The book expertly blends Darwin's personal narrative with the science behind the theory of evolution and also manages to insightfully connect his work to the modern day. In doing so the book is more than just an autobiography, Strager peels back the curtain (so to speak) and shows us the ways science and personality intermix, in Darwin's time and in the modern day. Darwin's ideas, for example, were not fully appreciated with the fanfare we ascribe to them nowadays, and in some circles were even looked at as unremarkable, until a few key supporters of the idea became vocal about how game-changing Darwin's ideas really were. It may sound like a cliche, a monumental idea is not fully appreciated in its time, but I think too often we think of science as the objective pursuit of facts but Strager shows us, through Darwin's life, that time and time again society, personality, and circumstance play a huge role in scientific discovery and what is considered "good science".

It's an excellent read, masterfully written with technical detail and clear scientific mastery, but most of all a compelling and engaging narrative that Strager manages to keep relatable to the reader no matter the background. Whether you're an evolutionary biologist, or someone who just enjoys a good story, I think you'll get something meaningful out of this book.
I liked this book. It was interesting and well-written. It covers Darwin’s life and his work in an entertaining fashion. It is, however, not the book for you if you are interested in a very detailed analysis of Darwin’s ideas concerning evolution. They are provided, but in a very summarized and abbreviated form. The book also covers the reaction to Darwin’s work and to current work in the field. My major reservation, and why I cannot give it five-stars, is that it lacks an index, table of contents or any illustrations, the lack of which seriously reduced the utility of the book. It is difficult to go back and search for something that you have read without a table of contents or index. Evolution is also a field where illustration are very useful, as would a map showing the voyage of the Beagle.
I enjoyed that passage in the book regarding Darwin's numerous examples used from the plant and animal world in his works as I enjoyed this book! More than a book about just his life (which was interesting in and of itself) but am surprised to learn of the lasting impact his efforts continue to have on the world of science even today with ever more recent discoveries. A note to myself to further look into the mystery behind the ill-fated hot-air balloon expedition of the North Pole by Salomon Andrée (always a plus when a book leads to further areas of interest) and to others a definite recommend of "A Modest Genius" for all the great information. Very good book!
